Do You Need A
Grant?
Many people employed in the public sector find
themselves facing dwindling budgetary resources. Yet, many of these same dedicated people
have a continuing need for new, up-to-date, educational materials to help them fulfill
their mission to disseminate awareness information to the general public. So, many public
servants that never had to consider it before are turning to grant writing. Many view
grant writing as the logical "next step" to secure funding for their educational
efforts.

Writing
A Grant
Grant writing can be a daunting task. Grant
writers are typically expected to detail every aspect of their proposed project. They are
usually expected to project all costs related to the project. They must follow a detailed
(and oftentimes cryptic) application process. If they are awarded a grant, they will have
to follow up with in-depth reports on the effectiveness of their project and financial
statements about how theyve spent the grant money. Audits are common. In order to
help you get a feel for what may be required of you (and how you might accomplish it) we
have provided links to some fine Internet sites that have grant writing tips and examples.

About Federal Grants
As you might expect, these grants are
available to persons and organizations from any state in the Union. Grants from the
Education Dept. are the most common, but the Dept. of Justice and the Dept. of Housing
& Urban Development have a lot of grants also. (Most grants from the Natl. Institutes
for Health are for medical research.)

Asking Business Leaders In Your Area For
Help
Sometimes the easiest way to fund a small
purchase (like one of our videos) is to directly solicit money from the business community
in your area. You may be surprised at how open many business leaders are to the idea of
partnering with local schools, non-profits, and law enforcement agencies in this way.
